Shaw Group: AP1000 Technology Is Sound, Nuclear Projects Will Continue, an Industrial Info News Alert

SUGAR LAND, TX--(Marketwire - Apr 12, 2011) - Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- At yesterday's conference call regarding The Shaw Group Incorporated's (NYSE:SHAW) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) second-quarter earnings, executives of the company seemed optimistic about Shaw's future in the nuclear power sector -- a sector that, because of the recent events at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, faces a much more questionable future than before the March 11 tsunami and earthquake.

In 2006, Shaw acquired a 20% stake in Westinghouse Electric Company (Monroeville, Pennsylvania), which designed the AP1000 nuclear reactor. AP1000 units are currently being constructed in China and make up the backbone of current new-build U.S. nuclear projects. The reactor's final design approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission should take place in September of this year.

Referring to U.S. nuclear projects under way, Shaw CEO J.M. Bernhard seemed optimistic about construction of Vogtle units 3 and 4 in Georgia and the V.C. Summer units 2 and 3 project in South Carolina.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $105 billion in projects for which Shaw is performing engineering and construction work, including $81 billion in nuclear power projects in the U.S. and China. Details of these and other Shaw projects can be found in Industrial Info's North American Project Database.
