Shawinigan Aluminium upgrades its manufacturing facility with support from the Government of Canada

The Mauricie firm is now well positioned to meet its growth objectives

SHAWINIGAN, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 9, 2016) - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

Manufacturing firms need adequate resources to expand, innovate and export their innovative products. The Government of Canada is proud to support firms such as Shawinigan Aluminium, world leader in the manufacture of premium grade aluminum billets. The company has built a solid global reputation by focusing on quality to satisfy its most demanding clients. In 2014, this secondary aluminum processing firm reclaimed the casting centre from the Rio Tinto Alcan plant.

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, announced that Shawinigan Aluminium is obtaining a $700,000 repayable contribution to upgrade its manufacturing facility and meet its growth objectives.

The contribution was granted under CED's Quebec Economic Development Program (QEDP) and was used for the installation of independent electrical systems that are completely separate from those of Rio Tinto Alcan's industrial complex.

"By supporting the upgrade of Shawinigan Aluminium's manufacturing facility, the Government of Canada stands firm on its commitments and helps enterprises expand, innovate or export their products so that they can create high quality jobs for the middle class, thus ensuring prosperity for the Canadian economy."

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED

"The Government of Canada is committed to promoting the role of innovation as an important way of encouraging company diversification and growth. This is why we are pleased to support the development of Shawinigan Aluminium, thus enabling the firm to remain competitive, continue to provide quality products and maintain some 100 well-paid jobs here, in Shawinigan."

François-Philippe Champagne, MP for Saint-Maurice-Champlain and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance

CED is one of the six regional development agencies under the responsibility of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, the Honourable Navdeep Bains.
