Even as the economy slowed, Sherpa added more than 300 new clients since June, as businesses of all sizes and across industries struggle to gain control of data residing in company emails.

Current economic uncertainty will continue to squeeze IT budgets in 2009, according to Gartner, but that does not mean the government is going to reduce pressure on companies to meet new compliance requests or give them more time to satisfy them. According to analyst firm DCIG, the number of enforcement actions the SEC is carrying out is increasing, and Congress is promising to pass even more regulations in 2009. DCIG adds that companies will need to disclose much more information than ever before. Since more corporate data is in electronic form, especially in the form of email, these new regulations will increase the burden on IT to effectively store and discover information. Companies will need to obtain the appropriate expertise and tools to respond to these new challenges.

Sherpa customers added since June span vertical markets, but were highlighted by companies in the legal, financial services, manufacturing and energy categories. Representative new customers include Banker Steel Company, the City of Westlake, Ohio, Alliance Coal, LLC, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
