SHONA D'AFRIQUE IX : Summertime Rendez-Vous of Culture and Nature in Beaconsfield

From July 13 to the 21, 2013-Centennial Park

BEACONSFIELD, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - July 2, 2013) - The annual exhibition and sale SHONA D'AFRIQUE IX is back this summer at Centennial Park in Beaconsfield, displaying an impressive collection of more than 150 handcarved stone sculptures created by some thirty artists from Zimbabwe. Organized by ZimArt in collaboration with the Cultural Services of Beaconsfield. The exhibition is free and running daily from Saturday July 13 to Sunday July 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An ideal family outing, the exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to discover the beauty and emotional power of internationally renowned Shona sculpture. Located on the waterfront of Lake St. Louis (288 Beaconsfield Blvd.), the park also provides playground facilities and picnic areas.

Simon Chidharara who first came to Beaconsfield as ZimArt's 2007 artist-in-residence, is the first artist to be invited to return to Canada. Simon will be on site throughout the exhibition sculpting, talking about his work and the creative process and answering questions from visitors. His sculptures will be featured prominently in the exhibition

Giving back to Zimbabwe : A SOCIAL RESPONSABILITY

Selected works will be auctioned to raise funds for the construction of Maori primary school in a rural part of Zimbabwe. Bids will be accepted throughout the exhibition closing with a silent auction on Sunday, July 21 at 3 p.m.

About FRAN FEARNLEY

Director and curator of ZimArt, Fran Fearnley was one of the first to bring Shona sculpture to Canada with the opening of the Rice Lake Gallery near Peterborough, Ontario in 2000. An avid art collector and former journalist, Fran spends several months each year in Zimbabwe working with artists and selecting works for upcoming shows. Committed to fair trade practices, Fran aim to build sustainable relationships with the artists she represents. She also supports since 2006 grassroots projects with the « giving back » division of ZimArt.
