Shopping Goes Geek for the Holidays With Wolfram|Alpha

Building on Strengths Developed in Math, Science, and Socioeconomic Data, Wolfram|Alpha Creates Unique and Useful Online Shopping Experience

CHAMPAIGN, IL--(Marketwire - Dec 15, 2011) - Just in time for the holidays, Wolfram|Alpha is introducing a new functionality that provides consumers with a unique approach to shopping for consumer electronics. By leveraging data from Best Buy's public APIs, Wolfram|Alpha users will now be able to browse through more than 35,000 appliances and consumer electronics products. Wolfram|Alpha's intuitive, natural-language interface helps you hone in on the precise products you need, while its powerful data visualization capabilities give you an innovative overview of any shopping category.

"Our decision to utilize Best Buy data to empower the consumer when making purchasing decisions builds on our ongoing efforts to make the world's knowledge computable," says Luc Barthelet, Executive Director of Wolfram|Alpha. "Combining Wolfram|Alpha technology with the most sought-after consumer electronics products is a natural fit and is only our first step into offering more extensive shopping computations. We'll continue to expand our product coverage with Best Buy and beyond."

Type in the name of a product category -- "dishwashers" or "tablet computers," for example -- and Wolfram|Alpha generates a comprehensive, custom analysis. What are the typical dimensions and other physical characteristics of other products in this class? How common is a given product feature? Wolfram|Alpha helps you to answer these questions.

Combining our natural-language interface with data from Best Buy's public APIs also allows users to do more intuitive searches. Renovating your kitchen and need a dishwasher that fits specific dimensions? Enter "dishwashers narrower than 25 inches" into Wolfram|Alpha to get a list of dishwashers that meet your needs. Building a new entertainment center and need to find a narrow Blu-Ray player within a specific budget? Try asking Wolfram|Alpha for the "narrowest Blu-Ray player under $100." For bargain-hunting photographers out there, it is even possible to ask Wolfram|Alpha to find "the lightest digital camera under $100 with a pixel resolution greater than 12MP."

Wolfram|Alpha can answer all of these questions and more. Can't choose between a couple of products? Just key in model or SKU information for each product, and Wolfram|Alpha generates a side-by-side comparison. How do other models compare in terms of price, features, and dimensions? Which brands have the most products within your pricing "sweet spot?" What similar and related products might you also consider?

Consumers will also be able to complete their shopping by visiting the Best Buy website through the ease of a click on Wolfram|Alpha.
