Should Breast Lift Surgery and Breast Implants Go Together? Sarasota Plastic Surgeon Answers Common Questions

SARASOTA, FL--(Marketwired - Mar 17, 2015) - With the range of options now available for women who are considering breast enhancement, there are a lot of questions about which procedure or combination of procedures can offer the best benefits. Dr. Jeffrey K. Scott, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Sarasota in the Bradenton area, says it all depends on the individual patient's physiological needs and their ultimate goals. He says one of the most common questions he is asked is whether a breast lift, breast augmentation, or both would be recommended. Dr. Scott notes that women who are considering breast implants to enhance the volume of the breasts in addition to breast lift surgery to give them a more youthful appearance may not necessarily need both procedures to achieve satisfactory results. 

The key, Dr. Scott says, is having a thorough understanding of the differences between the two procedures. Breast augmentation utilizes saline or silicone implants, or the patient's own fat, to add volume and fullness to the breasts, while breast lift surgery is designed to address ptosis -- a condition characterized by excess, inelastic skin that may give a sagging appearance to the breasts as well as a downward descent of the nipples. Dr. Scott says ptosis is a very common effect of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and simply the natural aging process. Breast lift surgery removes the loose, excess skin and tightens the remaining skin while also repositioning the nipples for a more youthful appearance. The procedure ultimately "lifts" the breasts a bit higher on the chest to give them a more youthful "perky" look. 

Dr. Scott says, for women who simply want to add volume to the breasts, a breast augmentation is often enough. However, he notes, women who would like to correct sagginess in the breasts and add more breast fullness, may benefit from both procedures, providing them with a comprehensive breast rejuvenation. Dr. Scott says the combination of breast implants and breast lift surgery can often benefit women who have lost volume in the breasts after pregnancy. Even so, he mentions, there are others for whom only one procedure is necessary to achieve their goals.
