Showcasing Canadian Winter Road Know-How at the XIII Winter Road Congress in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2010) - Canada's Transport Minister John Baird took part today in welcoming participants from around the world to the XIII International Winter Road Congress. Organized by the World Road Association (PIARC), the congress will be held in Quebec City from February 8 to 11 and will showcase the Canadian road and transportation industry.

"As the second-largest country in the world, which spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific and Arctic oceans, Canada has developed extensive expertise in sustainable winter service practices," said Baird. "We look forward to sharing our knowledge and learning with our international partners."

A road industry exhibition housing 12 national pavilions, including Canada's, is also being held during the congress. The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), will open the Canada Pavilion on the second day of the congress, showcasing 13 Canadian transportation-related companies, the Government of Canada, as well as provincial and territorial governments.

"Canada is a world leader in winter road development," said Minister Merrifield. "The Canada Pavilion is an excellent venue to highlight Canadian innovations and expertise at an international level."

The Canada Pavilion will feature informative technical presentations related to road salt use in Canada, automated warning systems for winter driving conditions and winter tire expertise. Nearly 1,500 participants from 45 countries are expected to attend the congress this year.

The Winter Road Congress is held every four years as a forum for sharing information on the latest road transportation practices and technologies being used around the world. The theme of this year's congress is "Sustainable Winter Service for Road Users."
