Built around 16 elements in 11 groups, including two "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) elements and one Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element, the optical design of the 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports significantly minimizes spherical aberrations, as well as axial and transverse chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity and color fidelity. This super telephoto is further characterized by its dust- and splash-proof construction, which includes water- and oil-repellent front lens coatings for use in trying conditions. Durability is enhanced and weight is reduced by its brass mount, magnesium-alloy barrel, and carbon fiber hood, and the integrated tripod mount features 90° click stops for quickly and intuitively switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

Other customizable lens features include an Optical Stabilizer (OS) system that provides up to four stops of image stabilization, which can be set according to two modes, including a panning mode, to benefit making sharper imagery with slower shutter speeds. A Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, and both OS and HSM functions can be customized with the optional Sigma USB Dock.

Moving to the Art series, the 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is distinguished by its advanced optical design, which includes two SLD elements to minimize chromatic aberrations, as well as sagittal coma flares, so that high-quality portraits can be rendered even under challenging point lighting conditions with high contrast. This 85mm lens expands not only the line of high-quality Art-series lenses, but, more specifically, Sigma's current offerings, which are capable of providing an aperture of f/1.4 for full-frame cameras. The result is a lens that is not only capable of precision focus, but for areas within a frame that are intentionally blurred, they truly complement elements that are rendered sharp.

A new HSM provides the 85mm f/1.4's autofocus system with 1.3x more torque over earlier Sigma 85mm lenses and helps to ensure accurate operation that is faster than previously available. However, manual focus can always be accessed through the focus ring, so that the placement of focus within an image is always in the photographer's control.

Finally, the 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art is Sigma's third-generation ultra-wide-angle zoom that is compatible with full-frame DSLRs, and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistency throughout the zoom range. The optical design utilizes several aspherical and FLD glass elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as to reduce distortion and maintain peripheral brightness to provide landscape, architectural, or wide-angle photography enthusiasts with a tool that functions well in a wide variety of shooting conditions.

The 12-24mm f/4 also includes an updated HSM AF system, and is constructed to be dust- and splash proof so that it can be used to produce a wide variety of compelling imagery even in inclement conditions. Aside from rubber seals, reliability is further enhanced by a brass mount, as well as the use of metal combined with thermally-stable composites.
