The sustainability scheme, which rates hotels and tourism companies across the world for their commitment to the environment and the local community, has conferred the highest possible rating to each of the five resorts -- the Gold certificate -- indicating the highest level of compliance within the requirements established by the scheme which assesses properties on a range of criteria ranging from the reduction of energy consumption to a fair wages policy.
The hotels distinguished with the Travelife Gold Award are the Riu Negril and Riu Palace Tropical Bay, in Negril, the Riu Ocho Rios, in Ocho Rios and the Riu Montego Bay and Riu Palace Jamaica, located in Montego Bay.
In total, 74 RIU hotels worldwide have so far been certified by Travelife, and all of them have achieved the highest grade of compliance. Within the next few weeks, the audits of RIU's hotels in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, Aruba, Panama and Saint Martin will be completed; the aim is to receive the certificates in early 2015.
