Silicon Valley Professional Earns Accreditation in Public Relations

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - August 18, 2008) - Lisa Bellavance English, PhD, has successfully completed the rigorous examination for Accreditation in Public Relations, entitling her to use the APR designation in recognition of her professional accomplishments and experience.

Dr. English is Director of Corporate Communications for Guava Technologies, Inc., in Hayward, California, where she is responsible for developing and managing communication strategies, marketing support, and corporate branding in the field of life sciences research and human health for the privately held biotechnology and medical device company.

The announcement was made by the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB), a consortium of nine professional communication organizations, including the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which directs this competency certification program.

The goal of the accreditation program is to improve the professional practice of public relations by assessing competence in critical areas associated with the field of communications. The examination is designed for public relations professionals with at least five years of experience, and candidates who successfully complete the rigorous process are granted the APR designation.

"Earning the APR reflects a mastery of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to succeed in our increasingly complex profession," said Marisa Vallbona, APR, 2007 chair of the Universal Accreditation Board. "Practitioners who achieve this designation demonstrate their commitment not only to our profession, but also to a strong code of ethics and to the betterment of their organization and clients."

The computer-based portion of the examination is administered at more than 30 Prometric Testing Centers throughout the year. The Readiness Review is conducted prior to the computer-based exam by a panel of three accredited members of the organizations participating in the UAB. Professionals earning the APR must maintain their credential by continuing professional development, providing leadership to the profession, and serving their local communities.
