Simmons Law Firm Supports November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Research Shows That Smoking Is Not the Only Risk Factor That Contributes to a Lung Cancer Diagnosis. For Example, Asbestos Exposure Is Also Often a Contributing Factor. To Help Build Awareness About This Deadly Disease, the Simmons Firm Has Announced Its Support of November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month

EAST ALTON, IL--(Marketwire - November 18, 2010) - The Simmons law firm, a leading asbestos law firm, has announced its support of November as National Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Lung cancer is the most common disease caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral used primarily for insulation, is dangerous at any level of exposure. In addition to the nearly 3,000 Americans who die each year from mesothelioma, the disease most commonly associated with asbestos exposure, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization estimates that more than 5,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer.

The firm applauds prominent awareness groups like the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and the Lung Cancer Alliance for their advocacy work on behalf of lung cancer patients and their families by encouraging participation in LCA events meant to raise awareness of lung cancer in communities across the country. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America, killing more people than the next four deadliest cancers combined, according to the National Cancer Institute. This year alone, more than 222,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer.

While many people associate lung cancer with smoking, research published by the Lung Cancer Alliance shows that more than 60 percent of new lung cancer patients have never smoked or quit decades ago. The National Cancer Institute lists a number of risk factors for lung cancer besides smoking including radon, air pollution, family history and asbestos.

"Every day, we work closely with families who have been affected by mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer," Simmons firm partner Michael Angelides said. "Because we've seen firsthand just how devastating the effects of asbestos exposure can be, we feel compelled to voice our support on this issue and help shed more light on this disease. We strongly support all efforts to ban asbestos and to develop new treatments for victims of asbestos-related diseases like lung cancer."

The Simmons firm is a long-time supporter of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation as well as the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and has pledged over $10 million to establish the Simmons Cancer Institute at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. In 2010, the firm established the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation to support medical research and awareness of asbestos-related diseases.
