Simmons Law Firm Welcomes News of House Resolution Recognizing National Mesothelioma Awareness Day

House Passes H. Res. 771, Proclaiming Sept. 26 as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day

EAST ALTON, IL--(Marketwire - December 1, 2010) - Mesothelioma Awareness Day has officially become a national day to promote awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos exposure. On Nov. 29, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed House Resolution 771, which annually recognizes Sept. 26 as National Mesothelioma Day.

As a long time advocate for patients and families affected by mesothelioma, the Simmons law firm is pleased to observe this victory with clients, their families and the mesothelioma community.

"The passage of House Res. 771 creates a powerful tool that will help raise awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of exposure to asbestos," said Mike Angelides, Simmons firm managing partner. "Nearly 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, and the more we can do to promote awareness about this deadly cancer, the better chance we have of fully banning asbestos and advancing critical medical research."

Mesothelioma is cancer that occurs in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly cancers. The government estimates that more than 1 million Americans risk exposure to asbestos at work and that more than 35 million homes and businesses contain asbestos-tainted insulation in their walls and attics.

The Simmons firm specializes in mesothelioma cases and has represented thousands of families in lawsuits against asbestos manufacturers and distributors. Simmons has also been a major backer of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, as well as an active supporter of cancer research and advocacy initiatives throughout the United States.

In 2009, the firm launched Miles for Meso, a fundraiser run and walk dedicated to raising money and awareness for the disease. Races have been held in Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Indiana and Virginia, and more races have been planned in Texas, Massachusetts and California. All proceeds have benefited the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

"The firm would like to extend its appreciation to the medical experts, government leaders, advocates and mesothelioma patients and their families who tirelessly worked to achieve this national day of recognition for mesothelioma," said Angelides. "We would especially like to recognize Congresswoman Betty McCollum of Minnesota who introduced and pushed the resolution through the House; Senator Patty Murray, of Washington, who was critical to passing the resolution in the Senate; and the employees at the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation who provided the advocacy needed to achieve such a success."
