Sister Companies Are Recognized by NARI for Accessible Design Project

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - February 11, 2010) - Adams Morgan -- The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Metro DC chapter recognized the best remodeling companies in the greater Washington, DC market on January 30th. Signature Elevators & Accessible Design and its sister company Signature Kitchens, Additions & Baths were given a finalist award for their joint work on the remodeling of an historic Adams Morgan row house owned by two elder gentlemen one in a wheel chair and the other a leg amputee.

The project involved a residential elevator, a wheel chair lift, an accessible kitchen and an accessible bath. The house is a 110 year old masonry and balloon frame constructed residence 70' long, 16' wide. One of the owners, Carl Ludvik, said, "The project had to meet historic preservation requirements. DC historic review board noted that the project 'strikes a perfect balance between the competing concerns of accessibility needs and historical preservation.'"

Signature Elevator & Accessible Design started the accessible remodeling job with a postage stamp demolition from roof to basement, making room for a four stop residential elevator manufactured by Federal Elevator Systems. We modified the cab to 42"x 54" to give the owner the turning radius needed to enter & exit through elevator doors at 90 degrees to each other. In such a thin house it was not possible to stack our elevator doors one upon the other.

Signature Kitchens, Additions & Baths, designed specified products for & remodeled an accessible kitchen & bath. The kitchen remodel was designed using Medallion Cabinetry, because of its modest price and flexibility in modifications. The kitchen design included modified toe kicks to 8" and cabinet heights reduced to 32" dependent upon anticipated use. We used lots of pull out shelving, a fantastic blind corner pull out specially made for handicap height, & several counter top to ceiling cabinets with appliances garages for quick access.

Unique appliances were used in the accessible kitchen remodel: American Blue Star convection oven with French oven doors. For a cook in a wheelchair there is no door getting between them and their culinary creation. The General Electric Induction Cook top -- reach right over a burner on high and it is cool to the touch.

The accessible bath design & remodel included a most amazing product called the Sure Hands Lift. This unique patient controlled, patient lift runs on a ceiling track. The owner with no assistance is able to transport himself from bed to toilet to tub and back again. "The accessible kitchen remodel transformed what was antiquated into a showpiece, while a previously unusable bathroom was made an accessible bathroom so precise to my needs that I no longer require assistance," said Carl Ludvik.

Signature Elevators & Accessible Design finished the project with a wheelchair porch lift. The first floor was 6' above exterior grade and the basement was 3' below exterior grade. The solution was an outdoor residential wheelchair lift manufactured by Savaria Concord. The Savaria 1504 is rare because it can travel as high as 23 feet. Within its 23' it can have multiple stops and we needed three stops. The owners now have complete access to all four floors of their house as well as the sundeck and the street.
