SIU Announces New and Improved Website

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2011) - The Director of the SIU, Ian Scott, is excited to announce the launch of the Unit's newly improved website.

The new SIU website has been designed to be interactive allowing visitors easy and prompt access to information about the Unit's mandate, investigative processes, news releases, and available programs and services. New functionality and features include:

  • A comprehensive Media section which provides search functions for ease in locating SIU News Releases;
  • A dedicated section which provides statistical information on SIU cases and performance measures;
  • A twenty year historical timeline of the Unit's major milestones;
  • Interactive organizational chart outlining the Unit's structure;
  • Map indicating the location of SIU investigators across Ontario;
  • Detailed "Frequently Asked Questions" section;
  • Online Appeal for Witness form for civilians who may have been witness to an SIU incident, and
  • An interactive Contact Us forms allowing visitors to customize their inquiry.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must:

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
