SIU: Appeal for Witnesses

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating an incident that occurred on March 29, 2010 at Yonge Street and Walton Street in Toronto involving a 40-year-old man and plain clothes officers from the Toronto Police Service (TPS).

At 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning TPS arrested two men for alleged criminal offences. During the arrest one of the men became involved in a physical interaction with the officers. The man ended up on the ground where he was handcuffed and taken into custody.

The SIU is interested in speaking to anyone who witnessed any, or all of this incident. Witnesses are asked to contact the lead investigator at 416 622 0748 extension 9001.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
