SIU Concludes Investigation in Quinte West Area

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 30, 2011) - The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ian Scott, has closed an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault made against an officer of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Quinte West.

A female alleged that she was sexually assaulted during the course of her arrest on February 8, 2011 by Quinte West OPP officers in Trenton. The SIU designated five officers as witness officers and one officer as a subject officer. All of the officers were interviewed. Four civilian witnesses were also located and interviewed. Upon review of the investigation, the Director determined that there was insufficient evidence to justify proceeding with criminal charges.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
