SIU Continues Vaughan Collision Investigation

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 10, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its probe into the death of a Richmond Hill woman on Friday evening in Vaughan. The SIU has assigned six investigators, two forensic investigators and a traffic reconstructionist.

The SIU investigation thus far has determined that at 7:05 p.m. Friday January 7, 2011 a York Regional Police (YRP) officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Bathurst Street. The vehicle did not stop, but instead accelerated away. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a pole at Bathurst Street and Centre Street. The 23-year-old driver, Maria Christina Valvis Rocha sustained fatal injuries.

At present the SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and three officers as witness officers.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation

  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid

  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
