SIU Investigates Collision in Ottawa

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 18, 2005) - Five investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a collision that occurred earlier today involving the Ottawa Police Service (OPS).

The SIU was notified that at approximately 12:11 p.m., an OPS officer in a cruiser was responding to a priority call. Near the intersection of Woodroffe Avenue and Richmond Road, the police cruiser struck a van. The van lost control and struck a female pedestrian who was in a motorized wheelchair. The woman was taken to Ottawa Civic Hospital and is being treated for a fractured pelvis and leg.

The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1925 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
