SIU Investigates Collision in Welland

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - June 19, 2005) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a collision that occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. this morning in Welland.

The SIU was notified that a Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officer was conducting radar on Weber Road. The officer noticed a Toyota Corolla being driven erratically westbound on Weber Road, and initiated a pursuit of the car. Near the intersection of Weber Road and Church Street, the pursued car collided head-on with an oncoming car. Five people were seriously injured and taken to hospital. None of the injuries are considered to be life-threatening at this time.

The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to call the Unit at 416-622-1957 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
