SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Chatham

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - April 25, 2005) - Six investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) have been deployed to Chatham to investigate the circumstances of a single motor vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 1:05 p.m. on April 25, 2005.

The SIU was notified that Chatham-Kent Police Service officers attempted to stop a Chrysler Neon car after it allegedly went through police radar. The Neon lost control and collided with a tree on Indian Creek Road, east of Creek Road. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SIU is investigating the events leading up the collision and the extent of police involvement. The Unit is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
