SIU Investigates in Quinte West

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 13, 2005) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a 38-year-old man's serious injury in Quinte West.

The SIU was notified that on January 10, 2005, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers arrested the man for public intoxication. He was lodged in a cell at the Quinte West detachment. At the time of his release, the man complained of being in pain and was taken to hospital. He is at Belleville General Hospital where he is being treated for a broken hip.

The SIU has designated 2 subject and 3 witness from the OPP. The investigation is continuing.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
