SIU Investigates Shooting in Sudbury

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - May 20, 2005) - Six investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Sudbury today to probe the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred on May 19, 2005.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service notified the SIU that at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a home on Norma Street. The officers were involved in a confrontation outside the home with a 62-year-old man, which resulted in the man being shot in the chest area. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and is undergoing surgery for his injuries.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
