SIU Investigates Shooting in Whitby

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - May 7, 2005) - Seven investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old Whitby man.

At approximately 12:56 a.m. on May 7, 2005, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a home on Bluebell Crescent in Whitby. There was a confrontation between the officers and a man, resulting in shots being fired. The man was struck in the chest area and pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

The SIU has designated 1 subject and 7 witness officers from the DRPS. Investigators are canvassing for witnesses and the SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to call the Unit at 416-622-1925.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
