SIU Investigating Alleged Sexual Assault in Toronto

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 6, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding an alleged sexual assault of a 23 year-old Toronto man. On July 2, 2011, Toronto Police Service (TPS) notified the SIU regarding a complaint of a sexual nature against one of its officers.

The alleged incident occurred on July 1, 2011, shortly before the fireworks display at Ashbridge's Bay. TPS reported that the male was arrested in relation to an interaction with other civilians in the area of Lakeshore Road East and Winner's Circle.

The SIU is appealing for witnesses in relation to the arrest which took place on Boardwalk drive west of Winner's Circle at approximately 9:40pm. The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
