SIU Investigating Custody Death in Sioux Lookout

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 16, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the custody death of a man in police custody in Sioux Lookout yesterday.

On March 15, 2011 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sioux Lookout Detachment contacted the SIU and advised the following;

  • At 10:00 a.m. March 15, 2011 a 63-year-old Sioux Lookout man was arrested by the OPP and lodged in a cell at the detachment;

  • At 2:30 p.m. the man was found to be in medical distress;

  • An ambulance attended, and the man was transported to Sioux Lookout Hospital ;

  • The man was pronounced dead at hospital.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
