SIU Investigating Death in Toronto

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 10, 2010) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Toronto yesterday evening.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU at 7:05 p.m. on November 9, 2010 and reported the following:

  • At 6:17 p.m. members of the TPS responded to a call for service at an apartment building in the 2400 block of Kipling Avenue.

  • During the investigation the body of a 39-year-old Toronto man was located on the ground outside of the apartment building.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators from the SIU have been assigned to this investigation.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation

  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid

  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
