SIU Investigating Firearm Injury in Lindsay

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 24, 2011) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been actively investigating the firearm death of a 21-year-old man in Lindsay that occurred during the execution of a warrant at a residence in Lindsay on the morning of June 22, 2011. During the police interaction a Peterborough Lakefield Police Service (PLPS) officer sustained gunshot injuries.

As a result of the SIU investigation to date it has been determined that at least one of the officer's injuries was caused by a police firearm. The SIU has assigned an investigative team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer's injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and there have been no witness or subject officer designations made.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
