SIU Investigation Into Orillia Deaths Continues

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 5, 2011) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the deaths on May 3 of 28-year-old Jacob Sabourin and 19-year-old Rachel Merredew, both of Kingston, Ontario.

The SIU has assigned seven investigators, three forensic investigators and an accident reconstructionist to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash. One officer has been designated as a subject officer and six officers have been designated as witness officers. Four civilian witnesses have been interviewed.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation

  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid

  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
