SIU Looking for Witnesses to Oshawa Collision

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - July 6, 2005) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking for witnesses to a collision that occurred involving the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on June 20, 2005, a marked DRPS cruiser collided with a white Kia Magentis car at the intersection of Ritson Road North and Rossland Road East in Oshawa. The driver of the Kia Magentis, a 76-year-old Oshawa woman, suffered a serious neck injury as a result of the collision.

The SIU is probing the actions of the involved police officer.

SIU investigators believe that a young man may have witnessed the collision and are interested in speaking with him. As well, the injured woman used a man's cell phone to make a call from the scene and the SIU is interested in speaking with this man. These people and anyone else who witnessed this incident are asked to contact investigator John Line of the SIU at 416-622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529 x1935.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
