SIU Probes Incident in Ottawa

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 18, 2010) - Three investigators and two forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding an incident that occurred at 10:52 p.m. on Friday, September 17.

At 1:22 a.m. this morning, Ottawa Police Service reported to the SIU that officers had been conducting an investigation in the area of 545 King Edward Street, looking for a male person. While looking for the male person, another male was located in the area. As an officer went to speak with this male person, the 24 year male went over a fence and dropped from sight.

The 24 year old male was found lying on the concrete to the underground parking garage entrance to 10 Henderson Street. The male was bleeding from the head area and non responsive. He was transported to the Ottawa Civic hospital for treatment.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
