SIU Terminates Investigation in Thornhill

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 18, 2005) - On February 18, 2005, at approximately 2:46 a.m., the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified by the York Regional Police Service (YRPS) of a shooting that occurred earlier this morning.

The SIU dispatched six investigators to the scene of the shooting at New Westminster Drive and Centre Street in Thornhill. Preliminary information from the investigation indicates an YRPS officer was involved in a confrontation with two men in a car in a parking lot. The officer discharged his firearm and shot the passenger of the car in the leg.

The injured man was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he was treated for a minor flesh wound. SIU investigators interviewed the treating physician and the injured man and confirmed the injury was a minor graze to the skin of the man's leg. He has since been released back into police custody.

Based upon the detailed initial investigation conducted by the SIU, Director James Cornish has decided to terminate the investigation because of the absence of serious injury.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
