SIU Updates Collision in London

Attention: News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 18, 2005) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding a police pursuit and a collision that occurred on August 17, 2005, in London.

At about 1:45 p.m. that date, London Police Service (LPS) officers responded to a robbery call at White Oaks Mall and became involved in a pursuit of a car as it fled from the mall. The pursuit continued eastbound on Highway 402 until about 2:05 p.m. when the pursued car clipped a truck, lost control and rolled into a ditch. The four occupants were ejected from the car.

Two men from Quebec, 36 and 37 years of age, died from head trauma consistent with the collision and two men remain in serious condition at London Health Sciences Centre. Their identities are not being released at this time.

The SIU is investigating police activity during this incident and the circumstances surrounding the collision. As part of the investigation, 1 subject and 9 witness officers from the LPS have been designated and civilian witness interviews are continuing.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
