Six Apart Names Winners in Blog Design Contest

Designs to Be Incorporated in Top Blogging Platforms

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - April 22, 2008) - Six Apart, the world's leading blogging software and services company, today announced the winners to a month-long blog design contest. The winning designs are to be incorporated into Six Apart's award winning TypePad blogging service, as well as Vox and LiveJournal.

The contest, sponsored by HP, provided an opportunity to all designers at various levels. Three winning themes were selected from 355 entries. Winners were awarded with prizes from HP. A "Most Popular" Award was also awarded to the theme "Shiny" for the most votes.

Winning themes were based on external voting and an internal judging by Six Apart designers.

The First Place theme, "Garden," was designed by Beria Charles, a TypePad blogger who calls her blog "my bridge to my families and friends."

"Blog design is very important because it is where people -- like myself -- express their thoughts daily, where people learn about me and 'come to visit.'" Charles said, "The design is the important key that completes their identity. Blogs are people's virtual home and the design -- that first look and feel -- translates the words that are written."

Second Place theme, "River at Night," was designed by Teresa Jones. According to Jones, nature plays a big part in her designs.

"I love nature, and really love combining nature themes with a touch of whimsy. It takes me back to my childhood, where my imagination and creativity always ran wild." Jones said, "This particular piece is based off of a memory I have from my childhood, of sitting on the dock on Summer nights."

Li Kim Goh, a Vox blogger and designer of the Third Place winning theme, "Live and Learn" said when she entered the contest she "didn't really think about winning, but mainly just for fun and at the same time created a few new banners for my own Vox blog."

Charles said she joined the contest because "The chance to make a cool design that people would pick when choosing their blog theme."

"As a blogger I always check out the new designs and sometimes, I get the feeling that 'they could have this or that theme,'" Charles said. "So I wanted to participate in the contest to maybe bring some fresh, colorful, and so lovely that I would myself choose to use."

Creating a good blog design for bloggers was equally important to Third Place winner Li Kin Goh, who said that blog design was important "because it draws readers' attention and makes your blog stand out from the millions of other blogs."

Jones agreed that design brings readers to the 'essence' of the blog.

"Blog design is that first good impression, and it also usually gives us an idea about the blogger's personality and style," Jones said. "On a lot of occasions too, you get an idea of what kind of content you can expect during your visit. Content is the biggest plus for sure, but think about it -- what good is a cone without the ice cream?"
