Slaight Family Foundation Creates $1 Million, 10-Year Partnership With David Foster Foundation

The David Foster Foundation Has Received a $1 Million, 10-Year Commitment From the Slaight Family Foundation, Formalizing a Relationship Between the Two Organizations That Began More Than Three Years Ago

VICTORIA, BC--(Marketwired - March 25, 2015) - The long-term financial commitment by the Slaight Family Foundation to the David Foster Foundation, which works to support the non-medical expenses of families with children undergoing life-saving pediatric organ transplants, will allow the organization to support up to ten families annually. It is estimated that the cost to support the expenses of one family averages $10,000 per year. Since its inception, the Foundation has worked to assist 1,000 families across Canada.

"The David Foster Foundation has set a goal to raise $30 million by our 30th anniversary in 2017 and the support of our Life Legacy members like the Slaight Family Foundation means that we are on track to reach our goal," says Michael Ravenhill, CEO of the David Foster Foundation. "It's estimated that 85 percent of families with children waiting for organ transplants end up in either divorce, bankruptcy, or both. Our Foundation strives to alleviate the burden of paying the costs of added bills during this difficult time, in turn allowing parents to focus their attention on their sick child and their family."

With seven pediatric transplant hospitals across the country, families are often required to temporarily move to live in larger centres while they wait for a successful match and transplant surgery. This means two sets of bills to pay, often with at least one parent taking leave from their job to move with their child. The financial commitment by the Slaight Family Foundation means that up to 100 families will be supported during this difficult time.

"We like to see the difference our support can make and this gift will truly make an immediate difference for those families who require some financial assistance during this very stressful period for the family and their child," says Gary Slaight, president of the Slaight Family Foundation. "We also hope others will see the benefit such support can provide to families who are coping with lifesaving medical procedures."

The Slaight Family Foundation joins other Life Legacy members of the David Foster Foundation (those who have provided $1 million or more) including TELUS, the Newton Glassman Foundation in partnership with Catalyst Capital Group Inc., Jim & Sandi Treliving, Tan Sri Dr. Francis Yeoh, and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. For more information, visit www.DavidFosterFoundation.com.
