SLI Systems E-Retail Index Spotlights the Most Popular Search and Shopping Trends for the 2010 Holiday Season

Data From Fourth Quarter Showcases the Most Popular Items on Consumers' Lists This Season, Including Snuggies, Playstation Games, Engagement Rings, iPads, iPods and More

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - December 15, 2010) -  Black Friday and Cyber Monday are now behind us, and with less than two weeks until Christmas, the holiday shopping season is in full-force. Today, SLI Systems revealed this year's consumer shopping trends in its fourth quarter 2010 E-Retail Index.

SLI Systems (, provider of on-demand, merchandising, on-line search and navigation solutions for e-commerce sites, has tracked retail search and shopping trends through its E-Retail Index -- since October of this year, to lend important insight into some of the most popular items on consumers' lists this holiday season.

The SLI E-Retail Index evaluates the most popular site search terms and phrases from across more than 40 online retail sites across a range of categories, including Apparel, Jewelry, Consumer Electronics, Cosmetics and Gifts & Novelties.

"With the fast approach of Christmas, retailers are still pulling out all the stops to drive traffic to their online stores and capture more sales," said Shaun Ryan, CEO of SLI Systems. "Using our proprietary site search data to identify what is top of mind for consumers this holiday season, we've discovered that many popular items have been consistent over the last three months, leading us to believe holiday shopping began as early as September or early October this year. This is important information that e-tailers can use to prepare for the next holiday season."

Top Site Search and Online Holiday Shopping Trends for 2010
Combining site search data from the three SLI Holiday Index reports for October, November and December, a number of consistent shopping trends emerged. The products that remained popular across the three months included: leather jackets, engagement rings, Snuggies, lava lamps, OPI nail polish, Jane Iredale cosmetic products, laptops and digital cameras from top manufacturers like Sony, Nikon and Canon.

SLI Holiday Index Findings, December 2010
SLI's December Holiday E-Retail Index highlights the following retail shopping trends for the month:

  • Women's and Men's Apparel
In December, leather jackets, boots and denim items moved up the list as the most popular items searched for by consumers. Leather jackets have remained a popular item across the last three SLI indexes. Leggings, Christmas scarves, men's ties, slippers and apparel donning Hello Kitty or comedian Shane Dawson imagery was also popular in December. Interestingly, in October and November, hoodies and cardigan sweaters were high on the list for both men and women. In December, both items fell far down the list as others moved up.
  • Jewelry
According to the SLI December holiday index data, engagement rings continue to top the list, indicating there may be a number of wedding bells ringing post holidays this year. In addition, Men's watches also remained a popular item, with the top searches focused on designers like Movado, Rolex and Tag Heuer. Rings of all types also rose in popularity in December, with sapphire and emerald being the most commonly searched.
  • Cosmetics
OPI nail polish was the number one cosmetic item searched in December, likely a sign of women preparing for holiday parties. Other items like Moroccan Oil moved up the list, and top brands searched included Jane Iredale, Dermalogica, Jan Marini and Bare Minerals.

Searches for chemical-free and skin purifying cosmetics items, which were popular in both October and November -- such as sulfate-free shampoo -- were not on the list of top search terms this month.
  • Consumer Electronics
Playstation games, which did not show up in top site search terms in prior indexes, skyrocketed to the number one searched term in December, with people eager to purchase new games for holiday gifts. Laptops remained high on the list, while digital cameras from brands like Canon, Nikon and Sony also continued in popularity. Both iPad and iPod also moved up the list in December and may be showing up under the tree for many this holiday.
  • Gifts and Novelties
As in October and November, Snuggies continued to climb the site search ranks in December. Items related to Alice in Wonderland or the Nightmare Before Christmas were also popular during the month. As people plan their holiday gift giving, posters, lava lamps, clocks and wallets also made the top of the list.
