SlideRocket Survey Reveals Need for Presentation Revolution

National Survey Shows Frustration With Text Overload, Boring Slides and Large File Size; SlideRocket Launches Presentation Revolution to Engage Audiences and Bring Big Ideas to Life

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 21, 2011) - New data released from SlideRocket confirms what many already feel -- presentations are in drastic need of reinvention. More than 30 percent of respondents report falling asleep during a presentation, while the same number has snuck out of a presentation at least once.

Presentations are the most commonly used business tool, second only to email, yet these new survey results underscore the fact that it is time to say rest in peace to the old world of presentations and embrace a new way of presenting that engages audiences and brings big ideas to life. The SlideRocket survey polled people who use office software on a daily basis. Key survey findings include:

  • Would you rather: According to the survey results, respondents would rather do the following miserable activities than sit through a typical presentation:
    • 21 percent would rather do their taxes
    • 20 percent would rather go to the dentist
    • 18 percent would rather work on Saturday
  • Sleep-inducing slides: According to the survey, presentations have put more than 32 percent of the respondents to sleep. Of those, more than half (55 percent) have fallen asleep once or twice. Nearly 20 percent have fallen asleep so many times during a presentation that they have lost count -- a startling statistic that is true for twice as many men than women.
  • That's it - I'm outta here: Nearly 30 percent of respondents have snuck out of a presentation at least once. With age, comes patience -- twice as many Millennials have snuck out at least once versus Baby Boomers.
  • Frustrating features: Excessive text on slides, boring graphics, lack of analytics and large file size rank among the top frustrations.
  • 360 Degrees of dread: According to the survey data, people hate being on both sides of presentations. The survey found that 33 percent of respondents dread creating a presentation while 29 percent dread sitting through one.
  • Making a bad first impression: Survey participants who interact with traditional presentation tools less frequently find it four times more difficult to use than traditional spreadsheet applications.

IBOPEZogby International was commissioned by SlideRocket to conduct an online survey in May 2011 of 1,003 adults using office software on a daily basis. A sampling of IBOPEZogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the U.S., was invited to participate. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, education to more accurately reflect the population. The margin of error is +/- 3.2 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups. The MOE calculation is for sampling error only.
