SLR Makes International Acquisition

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 29, 2011) -

SLR Consulting, a leading international environmental consulting firm with offices in the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland and Australia, has acquired Metago, a South African firm that provides environmental consulting services to the mining industry throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Australia.

The deal is SLR's third international acquisition in 13 months and follows the mergers with Australian environmental consultancy Heggies Pty Ltd Limited and Alaskan firm Hoefler Consulting Group in 2010.

Metago, founded in 1994, is an employee owned company that has 63 staff based in four offices, three in southern Africa (Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Swakopmund), and one in Australia (Perth). These offices provide environmental impact assessment, mine design, and waste and water management. Metago is particularly active in offering advisory services to clients involved in the exploration, production and development of gold, platinum, coal, chrome, iron ore and uranium. Clients include Xstrata, Rio Tinto, Lonmin and Goldfields.

Strengthening demand in recent years for Metago's services has come from major mining firms seeking to develop operations in more environmentally challenging and remote locations and from financial institutions seeking to uphold the Equator Principles when investing in the developing world.

In Australia, Metago has worked on Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine tailing dams and rock dump facilities for many years. Metago has also designed high volume tailings designs for the St. Barbara gold mine. At Newmont's Boddington Mine, Metago has been involved in mine closure plans and surface water management plans.

David Richards, Chief Executive of SLR, said: "This acquisition is in line with SLR's continued strategy to expand its international environmental consultancy footprint. With Metago joining SLR Consulting, we become a leading consultancy in the international mining sector. Metago's complementary technical expertise and strong reputation also provides a great platform for us to extend our offering in sub-Saharan Africa as well as considerably strengthening our current Western Australian operations. In conjunction with SLR Consulting's existing strengths in resources and waste management, this acquisition will provide accelerated growth in the African and Australian markets."

Kevin Rattue, SLR's Director of North American operations, stated, "The acquisition of Metago broadens the depth of SLR's international consulting services and gives us the opportunity to provide an ever-expanding range of services to clients in the mining, energy, and waste management sectors. Metago's expertise in mine design, tailings management and water resources are services that we expect to be in continuing demand as commodity prices remain buoyant."

Richard Johnson, Chief Operating Officer for SLR's Canadian operation, commented: "We're very excited to have Metago on board as acquisitions such as these strengthen SLR operations in Canada, the USA and globally particularly in resource based economies by further adding to the company's overall knowledge and expertise, and continuing to enrich the company's current service offerings."
