Small Cell Base Stations Vital to 4G Deployments, Says In-Stat

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - July 7, 2010) -  In the first phases of 4G deployment, operators are installing LTE and WiMAX base stations in existing 3G locations because it's a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive strategy that will allow broad coverage quickly, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). Small cell base stations -- femtocells, picocells, and microcells -- are going to have a large role in this deployment strategy.

"A new class of base station, the compact base station, will enable pico and micro base stations to be smaller, cheaper and more power-efficient than ever before," says Allen Nogee, In-Stat analyst. "Compact devices, like indoor picocells and microcells, have been around for years, but are finding different roles. Others, like enterprise femtocells and outdoor metropolitan picocells, are a new class of base station only possible in the last year because of developing semiconductors from companies like Freescale, Qualcomm, Percello, Design Art Networks, and picoChip."

Recent In-Stat research found:

  • Annual Femtocell Shipments will reach 31.8 million by 2014.
  • Worldwide Annual Femtocell Revenue CAGR will be 83.6% from 2009-2014.
  • Worldwide Metropolitan Picocell (Carrier Installed) Unit Forecast CAGR is projected at 378% from 2009 to 2014.
  • Microcell Base stations will increase at a slower CAGR of 14.2% over the same five year period.
  • By 2014 several million metropolitan picocells will be shipped to operators worldwide.

The research, "Small Cells Will Play a Very Large Part in 4G: Worldwide Femto, Pico, and Microcell Market Analysis" (#IN1004712GW), covers the worldwide market for femtocells, picocells, and microcells including:

  • Examination of femtocell, enterprise femtocell, indoor picocell, outdoor metropolitan picocell and microcell markets including drivers and barriers.
