Small-, Mid-Scale Gas-Conversion Projects Outnumber Large Ones 4:1, GTL North America Conference to Examine Trend

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - Apr 3, 2014) - Consistently low natural gas prices are emboldening developers to press ahead with projects to convert gas into many products, from ultra-low sulfur fuels, to lubricants, to sponge iron. Increasingly, project developers are designing facilities where much of the plant will be prefabricated at manufacturing centers and transported in modules to the site for final linkage. This way, they aim to bend the scale efficiency curve in their favor to enable competition with much larger plants. Zeus Development Corporation, the conference organizer and publisher of the Syngas Refiner Report, currently tracks some 43 of these projects.

"Our recent survey found that the majority of projects in North America target investments well under US$2 billion," said Chris Cothran, lead synthesis gas analyst at Zeus. "But advances in modular designs and transport allow lower output than was feasible a few years ago. Compounding the trend is the need for stranded gas solutions and interest in high-value specialty chemicals and waxes."

The 43 projects include five direct-reduced iron plants, 13 fertilizer plants, 12 methanol, five methanol to gasoline, four Fischer-Tropsch gas to liquids plants, two syngas to gasoline, two syngas to ethanol, and one methanol to DME. A complete list can be downloaded at

To learn the latest for the rapidly growing gas-conversion market in North America, the fourth annual GTL North America conference will be held, June 3-5, at the Houston Westin Galleria. Early registration is $1097 including Fluor's preconference workshop and Ventech's facility tour. Conference information and full program are available online:
