SMART Modular Technologies Announces Volume Shipments for 16GB DDR3 VLP CoolFlex RDIMM

Shipping in Production Quantities, This High-Density DDR3 VLP CoolFlex RDIMM Offers Improved Electrical, Mechanical, and Thermal Performance for Network Router and Telecom Switching Applications

NEWARK, CA--(Marketwire - September 28, 2010) -  SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. ("SMART" or the "Company") (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules and solid-state storage products, today announced that its 16GB very low profile (VLP) CoolFlex registered DIMM (RDIMM), is available in production-quantity shipments and is already shipping to a major telecom OEM. SMART's 16GB VLP CoolFlex RDIMM features a quad-rank configuration that uses mainstream 4Gb (512Mx4) DDR3 DRAMs and is designed to support up to a 1600MHz data rate (800MHz clock).

As Internet routers scale to handle next-generation networks, their memory subsystems must also expand with them, supporting higher packet memory needs. This trend is leading to demands for high-density, high-speed VLP modules for use in dense blade router applications. With its 16GB density, high speed, and VLP form factor, SMART's DDR3 VLP CoolFlex RDIMM is ideally suited for these types of networking and telecom blade applications. For example, a typical configuration in an application that uses an Intel® Westmere or Nehalem-based microprocessor could include two 16GB DDR3-1333 VLP RDIMMs per channel.

SMART's CoolFlex technology features a double-sided, multi-layer flexible circuit with an integrated edge connector, folded around a rigid aluminum core. The center aluminum core acts both to improve thermal heat dissipation and add rigidity when the modules are inserted into sockets. The interconnect environment of the flexible circuit, with its tight spacing and effective dielectrics, is tailored for high-speed signal propagation at ultra-low crosstalk levels.

"We feel that CoolFlex and DDR3 technologies are a perfect match," stated Mike Rubino, SMART's Vice President of Engineering. "Our module design enhancements take full advantage of CoolFlex's high speed capabilities in providing excellent signal integrity and better performance margins at the highest DDR3 operating frequencies currently available."

Extensive environmental testing has been performed to ensure that SMART's CoolFlex DIMMs meet the most demanding quality and reliability standards of major networking and telecom OEMs. For additional information regarding SMART's VLP CoolFlex RDIMM (SG5722G4AH8PDPH1) modules, visit www.smartm.com.
