SMART Modular Technologies Expands Product and Manufacturing Capabilities With Larger Facility in Brazil

SMART Adds Memory IC packaging in Atibaia

FREMONT, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 7, 2006 -- SMART Modular Technologies (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, announced today its grand opening of a manufacturing, sales, and support site in Atibaia, São Paulo, Brazil.

SMART, which has operated its Brazilian business from Guarulhos, São Paulo, Brazil since 2002, hopes to leverage its successful memory module manufacturing operation at this new site in Atibaia. SMART has extended its technological capabilities by adding capital equipment to package memory integrated circuits (ICs), a first for the Company. SMART plans to import finished wafers, cut them into individual die, and package them into memory ICs, which will then be used by SMART in the manufacture of memory modules, the company's primary product. This initiative is part of SMART's strategy to extend its business vertically, providing it with a competitive advantage by becoming a more comprehensive product and solutions provider.

The Atibaia site is located 75 km from the city of São Paulo in a high-tech industrial park. SMART Brazil will hold a ceremonial opening on March 8th, with expected guests to include Mr. Iain MacKenzie, President & CEO of SMART Modular Technologies; Mr. Noboru Takahashi, General Manager of SMART's Brazil operations; local authorities from the Ministries of Development, Industry and Commerce, and Science and Technology; and representatives from Samsung, one of SMART's tier-one wafer supply partners.

"The move to a larger facility in Atabaia, newly equipped with die packaging lines, represents an extension of SMART's technological capability and will serve as a catalyst for further product growth and diversification," said Mr. MacKenzie. "The successful opening of our new Brazil facility could not have been possible without the support and commitment of the political and financial leaders of Guarulhos and Atibaia, São Paulo, and the central government of Brazil, all of whom share and promote SMART's vision to advance the growth of the local high-technology industry."

"Our customers must meet the demands of the latest high-performance technologies, and SMART is eager to support their efforts. Our investment in packaging capabilities and providing a die level solution to the market, in part, demonstrates SMART's commitment to its customers," observed Mr. Takahashi. "With the opening of this larger facility, staffed by a work force committed to SMART's vision, we will build on SMART Brazil's historic success in servicing our global and regional customers with one of the broadest and technologically advanced line of products available in the industry."
