SMART Modular Technologies Introduces Industry's First 4GB DDR2 CoolFlex Mini-Registered DIMM

Highest Density, Smallest Form Factor Module; Designed Using SMART's CoolFlex and DDP Technologies; Targeted for Storage, Networking, Telecom, and Server Applications

FREMONT, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 28, 2007 -- SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. (SMART) (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, introduces the industry's first 4GB PC2-4200 244-pin DDR2 Mini-Registered DIMM (RDIMM) designed using CoolFlex and Dual Die Package (DDP) technology. SMART is expanding its already wide lineup of DDR2 modules with its 4GB Mini-RDIMM to accommodate the need for higher memory capacity in space-constrained applications.

According to market research firm iSuppli's H2 2006 DRAM module report, worldwide 4GB DIMM shipments in 2007 should reach 10.58 million units, which is an increase of 753% over 2006. SMART's 4GB DDR2 Mini-DIMMs are well-suited for a wide variety of storage, networking, telecom, and server applications.

SMART's 4GB DDR2 Mini-RDIMM is configured as 512Mx72 with the option of utilizing either a 4-rank module using SMART-built 1Gb (256Mx4) DDPs, or a 2-rank module using 256Mx4 BGA DDR2 SDRAMs. This option provides OEMs the flexibility to transition from the 4-rank 512Mb-based option to the 2-rank 1Gb-based option as market demand drives the price crossover point between 512Mb and 1Gb devices.

This new RoHS-compliant memory module is the industry's first 4GB DDR2 Mini-RDIMM designed with CoolFlex foldable PCB technology. CoolFlex allows for doubling the memory capacity with 36 DRAM placements on four sides. The new 4GB DDR2 Mini-RDIMM is also designed with two registers and two Phase Locked Loops for reduced loading and improved signal integrity. SMART's 4GB DDR2 Mini-RDIMM follows the JEDEC standard pin-out and has the additional Error Correction Code functionality required by many types of data-sensitive applications. Mini-DIMMs can be mounted with vertical, right-angled, or angled sockets to support design versatility.

"SMART is focused on satisfying OEMs ever-increasing demand for more memory capacity in small form factors," stated Alan Gulachenski, SMART's Senior Director of Advanced Memory Solutions. "Their small size and socketing options make SMART Mini-DIMMs a practical and versatile memory solution in many storage, networking, telecom, and server applications."

The ordering part numbers for SMART's newest 4GB DDR2 Mini-RDIMMs are listed in the table below.
