SMART Modular Technologies Introduces Rugged Xcel-10 2.5" Solid-State Drive With Data Security

New Industrial Temperature Range, Increased Shock and Vibration Tolerance, and ATA-7 Security Erase Features Extend Drive's Applicability to Rugged Applications

NEWARK, CA--(Marketwire - August 11, 2009) - SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. ("SMART" or the "Company") (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, solid-state drives, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, today announced a new ruggedized version of its Xcel-10 solid-state drive (SSD).

SMART's new rugged Xcel-10 SSD is optimized for defense and industrial applications where high shock, vibration, and temperature tolerances are as important as high performance and reliability. Featuring a SATA 3Gb/s interface, the new Xcel-10 is equipped with a higher operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, and improved environmental specifications of 50g operating shock and 16.4g operating vibration. The Xcel-10 product line also includes the ATA-7 Security Erase feature for applications where data elimination is important. Both Normal and Enhanced Security Erase modes are provided to eliminate all user data on the drive when activated.

"Since it supports both high sequential performance (measured in MB/s) and random I/O performance (measured in IOPS) in a ruggedized package, this new product is ideally suited for a wide range of applications, including flight data recording and rugged laptops," explained Mark Dupaul, SMART's Senior Product Marketing Manager. "The Xcel-10 now meets the needs of land, sea, and air-based applications that require greater environmental durability and increased data security."

Offered in a 2.5" form factor, the rugged Xcel-10 SSDs are available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities, and they are validated to MIL-STD-810F. The new Xcel-10 drives are available now.

SMART will showcase its entire portfolio of storage products at booth #403 at the Flash Memory Summit to be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, from August 11-13, 2009.
