SMART Modular Technologies Raises the Performance Bar With XceedUltra U100 SATA Solid State Flash Drive

XceedUltra U100 Solid State Drives Achieve Industry-Leading Performance Through a Serial ATA Interface, Bringing New Levels of Reliability to Data-Intensive Enterprise Computing and Storage Applications

FREMONT, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 26, 2007 -- SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. (SMART) (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, has launched its first in a new line of XceedUltra premiere solid state drives (SSDs). SMART's XceedUltra U100 is the industry's first SSD with a next-generation serial ATA (SATA) interface that achieves sustained read speeds of 100MB/s and write speeds of 60MB/s. This new level of SATA SSD performance and reliability is aimed primarily at the growing enterprise computing and storage markets, including streaming video-on-demand (VoD), internet search, online transaction processing, and other data-intensive storage applications.

The SMART XceedUltra U100 controls the costly performance and reliability issues inherent in legacy interfaces, and offers enterprise and server applications unprecedented speed, error handling, and data integrity compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). The SATA interface is combined with on-board error detection and SMART's new advanced data management technology, block-striping UltraPacket. SMART designed this unique, proprietary controller technology to support data-intensive SSD applications. Compared to a traditional HDD(1), the XceedUltra U100 demonstrates a 5X speed improvement in sequential write speeds and a 2X speed improvement in sequential read speeds.

The XceedUltra U100 is well-suited to support industry-standard storage applications such as redundant array of independent disks (RAID) and just a bunch of disks (JBOD), providing these applications with increased data reliability and performance. In addition to serving next-generation products, the ultra-fast XceedUltra U100 can be retrofitted into applications that currently use traditional HDDs without the need for redesign.

"Solid state drives are accelerating their presence across enterprise, military, medical, and industrial markets. With the lower price points for NAND flash, SSD suppliers are seeing more opportunities for the application of their products and are now targeting emerging and highly data-intensive applications traditionally reserved for hard disk drives," observed Walker Blount, SSD and Mobile HDD analyst at Web-Feet Research. "SMART is poised to capitalize on these latest opportunities," Mr. Blount stated, "with its new XceedUltra U100, which delivers the fastest serial ATA SSD in the market."

The 20GB XceedUltra U100 is the first in a series of SSD drives from SMART using the SATA interface; a 40GB version is scheduled for release in spring 2007. SATA is recognized industry-wide as the interface of choice in internal storage interconnect, and is positioned to replace older technologies that suffer from inherent performance bandwidth constraints affecting reliability at high speeds.

"This high level of SSD performance using a SATA interface is unprecedented," said Alan Gulachenski, SMART's Senior Director of Advanced Memory Solutions, "and it finally makes hot-swappable, high-reliability, fast computing possible in large-capacity, high-end applications such as VoD and enterprise storage."

The XceedUltra products are RoHS-compliant, and samples are available now.
