Smart Traffic Lights Use Technology to Speed and Protect Motorists

Small Yet Sophisticated City of Agoura Hills Goes High Tech With the Assistance of ISWest and Neocomp, Installs a Computerized Traffic Light Synchronization System to Ease Traffic Congestion

AGOURA HILLS, CA--(Marketwire - June 3, 2009) - ISWest and Neocomp Systems help the City of Agoura Hills deploy a computerized traffic signal synchronization system designed by Kimley-Horn in an effort to relieve traffic congestion on Kanan Road heading towards the 101 Freeway.

The City of Agoura Hills installed a traffic light synchronization system with surveillance cameras on Kanan Road since it receives a large volume of vehicles on a daily basis (over 25,000). In most cases, synchronization is active during peak times on weekdays. The individual signals operate on a "first-come-first-served" or traffic activated to monitor traffic flows. The cameras allow engineers to manually adjust traffic signals to ease any traffic congestion.

"This project was important to the City and its daily drivers. The goal of synchronization is to get the greatest number of vehicles through the system with the fewest stops in a comfortable manner," says Ramiro Adeva, City Engineer. "The reduction of large numbers of vehicles sitting idle at an intersection leads to a reduction in vehicle emissions and is good for the environment, which made this project even more worthwhile."

Neocomp was instrumental in helping the City implement this project. ISWest provided a 3Meg bonded T1 for the project and collaborated with Neocomp to design the security and switching aspect as well as remote management and monitoring of this new system.

"It's always nice when you work on a project that gives back to the community, in this case, easing traffic flows, more security and less pollution from vehicles waiting," said Drew J. Kaplan, CEO/CFO of ISWest.

"We got involved with this project because of the delicate balance of data and video requiring security, monitoring and remote management, which is Neocomps' specialty," said Tom Csanky, Director of Sales for Neocomp.
