SmartMetric Gaining Interest in Its Biometric Fingerprint Activated Credit Card From European Bank Card Issuers

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - March 28, 2016) - SmartMetric, Inc. (OTCQB: SMME) -- SmartMetric, the creator of the biometric fingerprint activated credit card is very pleased with the reception its new technology card is receiving from some significant card issuers in Europe. Our card has a built in fingerprint reader that is used to scan a card user's fingerprint and following a successful fingerprint match to then activate the card. It is designed to work with what are called chip cards or EMV cards.

EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard Visa and uses a chip that is on the surface of the card in order to provide better security for credit and debit cards. The SmartMetric technology adds biometrics as a further security layer on top of the EMV chip to provide added strong security using the power of biometrics to make payments cards even safer. EMV chip cards have been in use in most of the European Union and the United Kingdom for over 5 years with more than 3.4 billion chip cards now in use globally.

We see European adoption of our biometric card moving forward faster than the USA given that EMV chip cards have been in use now for a number of years while the United States is still dealing with the roll out of EMV. Although having said that, we are still very pleased with the level of interest now being shown by US based banks who are now talking with us about our biometric cards, said SmartMetric's President & CEO, Chaya Hendrick.

While the USA is the last advanced country to adopt EMV chip cards and is by far the largest single market in the world for credit and debit cards it is thought that by the end of 2016 more than 80% of payments cards in use will be EMV chip cards. This will see more than 1 billion EMV chip payments cards in the United States over the next 12 to 18 months bringing the estimated total global issued EMV chip cards to over 4.5 billion.

SmartMetric will be exhibiting at the upcoming Smart Card Alliance Payments Forum being held in Orlando Florida at the Loews Pacific Hotel from April 4th through to April 7th, 2016.

SmartMetric is offering its biometric fingerprint activated credit card for $50.00 a card to card issuing banks. Consumer research shows card users would pay considerably more than this if offered to protect against card fraud. The SmartMetric biometric credit card is built around the global EMV chip card. There are now more than 3.4 billion chip cards issued globally. Recent consumer research is showing that 67% of credit card holders would be happy to pay for a biometric safer credit card that has a built in fingerprint scanner.
