Smartronix Announces Recovery.gov Weathers the Storm

HOLLYWOOD, MD--(Marketwire - Apr 26, 2011) - On April 21, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a service interruption after a failure at its regional datacenter in Northern Virginia. This interruption resulted in availability issues for multiple sites hosted within its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) environment. One site that continued to be available and meet operational requirements was the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board's (RATB) Recovery.gov Website.

Recovery.gov is the U.S. Government's official Website that provides easy access to data related to Recovery Act spending and allows for the reporting of potential fraud, waste, and abuse. In April 2010, Recovery.gov became the first Government-wide system to be deployed to a public cloud computing infrastructure. The site integrates data from multiple sources and allows users to track spending using powerful geospatial mapping, communicate with Government using social media, and stay updated on the latest news and reports from the Federal Government.

Historically, AWS has proven to be highly reliable. However, deploying any enterprise or mission-critical solution on top of an EC2 infrastructure requires contingency planning, as would be expected for similar non-cloud deployments. To support the requirement for a highly reliable, interactive cloud-based solution, the RATB partnered with a team led by Smartronix to develop a robust, fault tolerant system. Based on a practical understanding of enterprise architecture and cloud-hosted services, the collective team implemented a highly available, layered design.
