SmithGroup-Designed Chandler City Hall Complete

CHANDLER, AZ--(Marketwire - May 17, 2011) - The new $47 million Chandler City Hall, designed by SmithGroup, has reached completion in Chandler, Ariz.

The newly constructed 137,700-square-foot Chandler City Hall, located at South Arizona Avenue and Chicago Street, consolidates service departments from various locales across the city, creating a permanent home for employees who had been working in leased space for nearly 12 years. Housed within are administrative offices, a public television studio, Council Chambers, an art gallery, and public lobbies. A 330-space parking structure and surrounding site improvements were also included in the project's scope.

SmithGroup's design was inspired by the idea of respecting the past and acknowledging the future. The building and its materials represent the legacy of historic downtown Chandler and the region, while simultaneously acknowledging the community's innovative technology driven industry. Above all, the new facility creates a sense of place and identity, giving the citizens of Chandler and visitors a destination that will serve as the city's community center.

The new municipal complex offers convenient access to the most utilized City services, creates long-term cost savings for taxpayers, brings new energy to the region, and serves as a source of pride for the community.

The 'walkable' campus is pedestrian-friendly with parking facilities close to the most commonly accessed departments -- the City Clerk, Neighborhood Resources, Community Services and Utilities. Unique spaces include the Vision Gallery, an art gallery that doubles as a community room, occupying 4,000 square feet of space at ground level. Through the Chandler Arts Commission, SmithGroup collaborated with artist Ned Kahn, who developed an original work of art, entitled "Turbulent Shade." Kahn's creation is a kinetic façade that moves with the wind, while shading the building from the desert's strong sun.

The new Council Chambers creates an iconic centerpiece for the complex, expressing ideas of inclusiveness and transparency and creating a gathering space for residents. A central breezeway serves as a prime connector of the plaza and is an extension of the central lobby. The design also promotes pedestrian connections to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park to the north, the civic campus to the east and a future mixed-use development to the west.

"Civic projects give a lot back to the community," says Mark Roddy, AIA, LEED AP, design principal at SmithGroup. "The City of Chandler recognized this and set high goals for the project -- embracing sustainability, enhancing the downtown area and making Arizona Avenue more appealing to developers."

"The SmithGroup design team spent time listening to and talking with elected officials, community stakeholders and employees to determine the key features that were needed in our new facility," says Marian Norris, Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Chandler. "The final design was innovative and reflected that input, creating a dynamic City Hall complex."

The project, completed in fall 2010, was designed by the Workplace studio at SmithGroup's Phoenix, Arizona office. The facility is anticipated to achieve LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
