Smurfit-MBI Further Expands Its Canadian Production Capacity: Official Opening of a New High Performance Corrugated Container Plant

MILTON, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 8, 2005) - Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (NASDAQ:SSCC) proceeded today with the official opening of its new Smurfit-MBI corrugated container plant located in Milton, Ontario. Several hundred people attended the ceremony that was followed by a plant tour and reception. Among the guests were Government officials including Gordon Krantz, Mayor of Milton; Ted Chudleigh, Member of Provincial Parliament - Halton from The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario; as well as many customers, suppliers, employees and senior managers of the company.

With its 100 employees, the new plant specializes in the production of corrugated packaging solutions. Construction of this 250,000 square foot facility was completed in April, with the first production trials performed and commercial production started in May.

Attending the ceremony, Patrick J. Moore, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Smurfit-Stone said: "This new high performance facility is a key strategic initiative for our Canadian business. This plant supports market growth in a region which has experienced a significant expansion of its industrial sector. Our new Smurfit-MBI facility also allows us to improve operating synergies with Smurfit-Stone's containerboard mills through increased consumption of their products."

The plant is equipped with a new state-of-the-art BHS corrugator that produces a consistent high quality corrugated board. It is also capable of rapidly producing several different flutes with very short setup times. The BHS corrugator offers corrugated size widths up to 98 inches. Other converting and printing equipment as well as a sophisticated production control system were also added to this highly automated facility that has an annual production capacity of 2 billion square feet of corrugated board (enough to cover 31,000 CFL football fields).

Steve Strang, Vice President and General Manager of Smurfit-MBI indicated that: "Our vision is to set new industry standards in quality, innovation, productivity, flexible deliveries and customer service. Through such exceptional offerings, we will meet the evolving corrugated needs that our customers and their customers expect. Every aspect of this new facility was thought out to ensure we achieve that vision."

"The new Smurfit-MBI plant is ideally located to serve the expanding Ontario market. Today, that expansion is being reflected by Ontario's diverse industrial sector which comprises companies from the food and beverage, automotive, logistics and advanced manufacturing industries. Smurfit-MBI's new facility offers them a complete, world-class, one-stop shop approach for all of their corrugated packaging needs," concluded Strang.
