Sobriety checkpoint launches MADD Canada's Campaign 911

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor TORONTO / OAKVILLE - ONTARIO / MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - April 27, 2009) - Motorists in downtown Toronto may be surprised to see Toronto Police Chief William Blair himself approaching their cars during a special sobriety checkpoint being held on April 29 to mark the national launch of MADD Canada's annual Campaign 911.

Together with the Toronto Police Service, MADD Canada is hosting the sobriety checkpoint to raise awareness of the campaign, which encourages motorists to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver. Special guests and MADD Canada volunteers will hand out Campaign 911 information and promotional materials to the motorists stopped by police.

About Campaign 911:

Campaign 911 encourages and empowers Canadians to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911. Across the country, more than 100 MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders will join with their local police and other partners to spread the message to report suspected impaired drivers. On average, 4 Canadians are killed and 207 are injured every day as a result of impaired driving. Effective 911 programs increase arrest rates for impaired driving by 30%, on average.
